Publisher's overview:
Over many years, the Hauts-de-Seine Departmental Archives have built up a substantial collection of autograph documents of all kinds—principally through acquisitions, and more rarely through donations or deposits—serving as invaluable milestones for understanding the history of the Hauts-de-Seine region.
Among the documents gathered over time are numerous pieces originating from the correspondence of major French literary figures who, to a greater or lesser extent, linked their lives to one of the municipalities within the current department. In the work À bâtons rompus: fragments de correspondances littéraires du XIXe siècle, Véronique Magnol-Malhache has made a selection focusing on 19th- and early 20th-century literature through fourteen personalities—from Honoré de Balzac to Paul Verlaine—whose letters are presented here. This eclectic selection alternately casts us as privileged witnesses to the everyday and intimate, and invites us into the inner workings of literary creation. The abundant iconography (including the complete reproduction of the letters) contributes to evoking this duality. The title reflects the fragmented nature of the collection (as replies are frequently unknown), while also evoking the spontaneity of an unstudied exchange. A partnership with the Société des Gens de Lettres and the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts highlights the historical ties certain authors maintained with these illustrious associations.
This publication helps shed light on a resource one might not necessarily expect to find in a departmental archive service—one whose confidential status is no longer warranted—while offering a fresh perspective on the careers of these famous letter-writers (and indeed their correspondents) and the network of sociability that united them.

Epistolary collections from the nineteenth century often bridge the gap between private intimacy and public literary production, offering insights into the networks of sociability that sustained authors. Departmental archives frequently preserve diverse autograph documents that document regional history alongside cultural heritage, revealing unexpected archival treasures. In À bâtons rompus, Véronique Magnol-Malhache presents a selection of letters from fourteen notable literary figures whose lives intersected with the Hauts-de-Seine municipalities. The publication highlights both the everyday concerns of these writers and the inner workings of their creative processes through an eclectic presentation of manuscript materials.
