Publisher's overview:

Serving as Director-General of Arts and Letters under André Malraux from 1959 to 1966, Gaëtan Picon remained above all a perceptive critic of writers and artists. While his Minister sought to disseminate the complete heritage of past cultural achievements far and wide through the Houses of Culture, Picon, acting as a philosopher inspired by Nietzsche, championed the creative impetus of generations such as those of René Char and Jean Dubuffet. As a pioneer in theorizing contemporary culture, he advocated for a reimagined Museum of Modern Art, transformed in both its intellectual foundations and its structural design. Standing apart from political shifts and structuralist trends, he devoted himself to exploring the genesis of works directly from their creators' studios. Consequently, he established the principles of a "conscious," poetic, and philosophical criticism. Yet, the dense interplay of a style that was simultaneously sensualist and abstract ultimately cast him to the margins of mainstream social imagination.

Positioned within twentieth-century French intellectual history, this volume examines the trajectory of Gaëtan Picon as a critic, theorist, and cultural administrator. The book traces his intellectual engagements with prominent figures such as René Char and Jean Dubuffet, highlighting his dedication to the creative process over rigid structuralist methodologies or partisan politics.

This scholarly study will interest researchers and students of modern French literature, art history, and the sociology of culture. It provides valuable context on the institutionalization of the arts in postwar France and the theoretical foundations of modern art curation. By analyzing Picon's complex critical style—rooted in both sensualism and abstraction—the text sheds light on the challenges faced by independent intellectuals navigating the intersection of aesthetic philosophy and state power.
