Tania Alice, Why Performance?
Theatre and Performance

Why Performance? goes far beyond mere practical reflections. It serves as an educational guide for practice, thought, and life itself. For Tania Alice, pedagogy is a transformative experience—not only for the student, but equally for the teacher—an experience centered around change. Pedagogy is a collaborative practice; it is an adventure embarked upon together. Many recent publications hide behind complex self-reference and nebulous theory. This book is different. For Tania Alice, art is always an encounter, regardless of who is involved—an exchange of affects far removed from insular academic discourse. Through her interventions, she seeks to liberate these affects from prevailing power structures to foster new forms of subjectivity.

Tania Alice is a Franco-Brazilian artist. She directs Performers Without Borders at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, where she teaches performance art and researches participatory artistic actions in trauma zones. Holding a Ph.D. in Literature and Arts from the University of Provence, her publications include Performance como revolução dos afetos (São Paulo, Annablume, 2016) and Manual para performers e não-performers - 21 ações artísticas para produzir felicidade (Rio de Janeiro, Multifoco, 2020), among others. She has also served as a visiting artist-researcher at numerous international institutions.

Performance art occupies a distinctive space within contemporary artistic practice, often bridging aesthetic exploration with social engagement and collaborative action. The broader field frequently examines how bodily presence and ephemeral actions can challenge conventional boundaries between creator and spectator. Within this intellectual tradition, pedagogical approaches in the arts often reexamine the traditional hierarchies of the classroom, viewing education as a shared trajectory of discovery. Scholars and practitioners in the discipline frequently investigate the intersections between creative expression, collective experience, and the circulation of emotional affects across diverse cultural and social landscapes.

Readers interested in contemporary performance practices, pedagogical innovation, and participatory art may find this volume relevant to their inquiries. The work reflects the author's extensive background in academic research and artistic intervention, particularly her focus on collaborative processes and participatory actions within complex social environments.
