I do not believe that one can explore anything in theatre without a conceptual framework. Yet, this framework must allow for—and indeed encourage, provoke, and necessitate—the experimentation of rehearsal; in other words, dramaturgical reflection must remain open to being transformed by the stage. It is this process of mutual contamination between thought and performance that I call stage dramaturgy.

Published by Les Solitaires intempestifs in their essay series, this work investigates the complex relationship between theoretical frameworks and the practical realities of theatrical production. The author argues that true dramaturgical reflection must not remain purely abstract, but rather engage dynamically with the living space of the stage. This perspective invites theatre practitioners, scholars, and students to rethink how conceptual ideas inform rehearsal processes, shaping a reciprocal dialogue where thought and performance continually transform one another.

The book addresses fundamental questions regarding the methodology of modern theatre-making, offering valuable insights for anyone interested in the mechanics of staging and dramatic analysis. By examining how intellectual structures can both guide and be altered by artistic practice, A.-F. Benhamou provides a thoughtful contribution to contemporary theatre studies. It serves as an essential resource for readers seeking to deepen their understanding of how theoretical inquiry enriches practical experimentation within the performing arts.
