Following the collapse of utopias, upon what intellectual and moral foundation can we build our life in common? For Tzvetan Todorov, there is only one: the humanist side of the Enlightenment. This major short essay does not merely outline the core principles of this intellectual current in a lucid synthesis: it measures them against the tragic events of the 19th and 20th centuries before questioning their relevance in the face of contemporary challenges.

The Enlightenment and Europe

Tzvetan Todorov, honorary director of research at the CNRS, is a historian and essayist. He is the author of numerous works, most recently The Adventurers of the Absolute (Robert Laffont, 2006). He also curated the "Enlightenment!" exhibition at the National Library of France.

The intellectual current known as the Enlightenment emerged during the eighteenth century as a profound transformation in European thought, emphasizing reason, individual liberty, and empirical inquiry over traditional authority. Over subsequent centuries, these foundational ideas underwent rigorous scrutiny, particularly as thinkers grappled with the complex relationship between rational progress and the profound historical crises ofelte the modern era. Tzvetan Todorov engages with this rich intellectual tradition by examining how core principles such as autonomy, secularism, and universality continue to inform our understanding of modern society and political ethics. This short essay outlines the core principles of this intellectual current in a lucid synthesis, measures them against the tragic events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and questions their relevance in the face of contemporary challenges. Readers interested in the history of ideas and modern humanist philosophy may find this relevant to current socio-political discussions.
