This book examines classic texts by Descartes and Montaigne, approaching them through the lens of the self-experience they enact and render communicable and shareable. Drawing on unique yet representative instances of identity disruption, the study explores the implications of thinking and writing—in other words, the elaborative work that transforms the traumatic potential of these critical episodes into cultural achievements. From this perspective, it addresses the special attention both Descartes and Montaigne pay to their thoughts and the sense of strangeness they generate, as well as to the activity of thought itself, compelled to process them. It is entirely plausible to view the "modern conception of subjectivity" through the prism of these experiences of psychological precarity, isolation, and social marginalization.

This study contributes to the broader philosophical and psychoanalytical inquiry into the emergence of the modern subject, positioning early modern texts within a tradition that connects introspective writing with psychological investigation. By examining how canonical authors articulate experiences of inner estrangement, the work engages with longstanding debates concerning the relationship between literature, philosophy, and the history of subjectivity in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century France. Readers interested in the intersections of early modern philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, and the literary representation of the self may find this volume a relevant contribution to ongoing discussions surrounding identity, thought processes, and cultural expression in the works of Descartes and Montaigne.
