Publisher's Overview:
Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), Hermann Hesse (1877-1962): three major figures who served as bridges between East and West, and three pioneers of intercultural dialogue at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the central thesis of this book, which brings together authors as diverse as the founder of anthroposophy, the pioneer of depth psychology, and the 1946 Nobel Prize laureate in Literature. All three drew upon the dichotomy between East and West, as well as the complex network of knowledge about the East available in their era, to develop their own distinct perspectives: an esoteric system synthesizing Eastern and Western wisdom around the mystery of Golgotha (Steiner), a psychological theory and therapeutic method enriched by Eastern insights (Jung), and a literary and poetic body of work inspired by the spirit and breath of the East (Hesse). All three called upon modern Western man to experience a personal transformation through initiation. Their project, more relevant than ever today, is conceived as a quest for meaning in a world "disoriented" by the advent of modernity.
Aurélie Choné, Senior Lecturer in Germanic Studies, teaches literature and the history of ideas at the University of Strasbourg. Her research focuses on the relationship between the German-speaking world and Eastern cultures and spiritualities.

Aurélie Choné investigates the intellectual currents linking the German-speaking world to Asian spiritualities between 1890 and 1940. By examining the distinct paths taken by anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner, psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, and novelist Hermann Hesse, the study illustrates how European intellectuals utilized Eastern traditions to address the spiritual crisis of modernity. This volume offers a rigorous contribution to intellectual history, tracing the reception, transformation, and sometimes instrumentalization of foreign philosophies within Western esoteric, psychological, and literary frameworks.
Scholars of cultural exchange, European literature, and the history of ideas will find this book particularly valuable for understanding early intercultural dialogue. It serves readers interested in the intersections of psychoanalysis, esoteric traditions, and comparative religion during the first half of the twentieth century. The work provides essential context for analyzing how modern Western thinkers constructed images of the East to foster personal transformation and redefine their own cultural identities.
