This original book fills a gap in Zola scholarship: for the first time, a specific category of characters—adolescents—is examined and analyzed through the unique function they hold in Zola's oeuvre.
Indeed, the author highlights the relationship between heroes still in the making, undergoing both intellectual apprenticeship and physiological maturation, and the entire *Rougon-Macquart* cycle, governed by a law of heredity whose transformations and possibilities for regeneration Zola investigates. A formal homology thus emerges between the experimental principle underlying Zola's series and the vital capacity of adolescence to transform while bearing the weight of heredity.
Developing a poetics of adolescence, as Véronique Cnockaert proposes, thus sheds light on the mechanisms by which a literary cycle is constructed and transformed.

The study of character types within the Rougon-Macquart cycle often focuses on the deterministic weight of heredity that defines Zola's naturalism. By centering on the adolescent figure, this book examines the intersection of biological development and narrative structure. This period of life, characterized by both physical maturation and intellectual formation, serves as a lens through which the experimental principles of the series are viewed. The text explores how these characters embody the potential for change within a system governed by the constraints of ancestral inheritance and environmental influence.
Readers interested in the structural evolution of the French naturalist novel may find this exploration of character function relevant. The work situates the adolescent as a formal element that reflects the transformative nature of the literary cycle itself. By linking the physiological process of maturation to the thematic concerns of regeneration and heredity, the analysis examines how Zola constructed his narrative architecture, highlighting the interplay between individual development and the laws that dictate the destiny of characters throughout the series.
