Other Literary Studies

Since the early 2000s, fantasy titles have been multiplying across collections and publishing houses traditionally dedicated to science fiction. In response to this growing success, the all-encompassing publishing category known as "literatures of the fantastic" (littératures de l’imaginaire) has emerged and progressively established itself. Countering alarmist narratives regarding a decline in reading habits, these stories are overwhelmingly embraced by younger generations. This volume seeks to understand the reasons behind this success by analyzing how these genres are received and examining their specific characteristics: a combined pursuit of escapism and realism, engagement within communities of interest, and the crucial impacts of age and generation. Far from the stereotypes that dismiss these works as "easy" reads devoid of literary merit, this sociological study highlights the richness and complexity of reading science fiction and fantasy. Through the lens of speculative fiction, it sheds broader light on reading practices in the digital age, the evolution of reading habits upon entering adulthood, and the dynamics of cultural distinction at play within genres whose legitimacy remains contested.

The emergence of the term littératures de l'imaginaire reflects a shift in the publishing landscape where boundaries between science fiction and fantasy have become increasingly porous. This sociological study examines these genres within the context of contemporary reading practices, focusing on the interplay between escapism and realism and how readers engage with these narratives. Readers interested in the sociology of reading and the evolution of genre reception may find these observations relevant.

This study examines how community engagement and generational shifts influence the consumption of speculative fiction in the digital era. By analyzing the transition from adolescent to adult reading habits, the work investigates the mechanisms of cultural distinction that shape the reception of these genres. It addresses the complexity of these works, framing them as objects of study to understand how readers assign value to texts that remain subject to ongoing debates regarding their legitimacy within the broader literary field.
