Publisher's overview:
There are three Old French translations of Alain de Lille's Liber parabolarum, of which the present one—previously unpublished, dating from the late 14th century—is highly likely to be the work of Thomas Maillet, an otherwise unknown translator of two Latin Facetus texts. This text conveys proverbial wisdom, interwoven with mythological allusions, and bears witness to the endurance of school texts that emerged in the Latin manuals known as 'libri Catoniani' in the 12th century and remained in use until the Renaissance.
The Liber parabolarum belongs to a long tradition of didactic literature that flourished in medieval Europe. These collections of proverbial wisdom were designed to instruct students in both moral conduct and Latinity. By integrating mythological references with aphoristic advice, such works served as foundational reading in the medieval classroom. The transmission of these texts into the vernacular reflects the broader movement of making classical and medieval Latin learning accessible to a wider audience, ensuring that the pedagogical structures established in the twelfth century continued to shape intellectual life well into the Renaissance.
This edition presents an Old French translation of Alain de Lille's Liber parabolarum, which is attributed to Thomas Maillet and dates from the late 14th century. The text relates to the libri Catoniani, a collection of Latin manuals that remained in use from the 12th century until the Renaissance.
