Publisher's overview:

Using as a methodological premise the protocols of statistical analysis applied to a corpus of twelve travel accounts—among the most representative of the 19e century—alongside a second corpus consisting of twelve works of fiction by the same writer-travelers to serve as a differential norm, Véronique Magri-Mourgues, in Le Voyage à pas comptés, sets out to map out, on rigorously established quantitative grounds, the most prominent markers and practices of travel writing from Chateaubriand to Loti.

The implications are significant, as this approach aims to move beyond the purely empirical description of a genre widely viewed as protean and elusive, thereby defining the conditions and components of its poetics during the historical period when writers first took center stage within it.

While identifying the dominant trends and major patterns that distinguish travel writing from fictional works, Véronique Magri-Mourgues's stylistic study proceeds through subtle, nuanced analyses guided by a perceptive reading of the texts, remaining consistently attentive to their unique features and atypical modalities. This reflection offers an essential theoretical and critical contribution to a deeper understanding of the genre.

Véronique Magri-Mourgues is a Professor of French Language and Stylistics at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis and a researcher at UMR 6039, Bases, Corpus et Langage, CNRS; MSH of Nice. Her research focuses on the linguistic and textometric study of 19e- and 20e-century literary works. She is a specialist in travel writing and has published a book entitled Le Discours sur l'Autre à travers quatre récits de voyage en Orient (Paris, Champion, 1995).

During the nineteenth century, travel writing emerged as a prominent literary space where canonical authors and lesser-known figures alike recorded their encounters with foreign lands. The formal identity of these accounts has long presented a critical challenge, often characterized by generic fluidity and a shifting boundary between documentary observation and creative narrative. Scholars examining this period frequently balance stylistic close reading with broader corpus-based investigations to map the recurrent motifs and lexical patterns that distinguish factual journeys from imaginative prose works.

Readers interested in nineteenth-century French literature and the formal evolution of prose genres may find this volume relevant. Véronique Magri-Mourgues, in Le Voyage à pas comptés, uses as a methodological premise the protocols of statistical analysis applied to a corpus of twelve travel accounts alongside a second corpus of twelve works of fiction by the same writer-travelers to serve as a differential norm. The study investigates the markers and practices of travel writing from Chateaubriand to Loti, aiming to move beyond the purely empirical description of a genre widely viewed as protean and elusive by defining the conditions and components of its poetics.
