Seriously?
Literary Theory, Linguistics and Stylistics

Laélia Véron is known for her doctoral thesis on wit in Balzac, recently published under the title Le Mot fatal (Classiques Garnier), as well as for her incisive essays on the connections between language and power: Le français est à nous !, co-authored with Maria Candea (La Découverte), and, with Karine Abiven, Trahir et venger (also published by La Découverte), which was reviewed by Jérôme Meizoz for Acta Fabula. She has now published alongside Guillaume Fondu (again with La Découverte) a new essay on the Political Problems of Irony, aptly titled "T'es sérieuse ?" Widely considered critical by nature—in that it allows us to critically reexamine dominant discourses by playing on quotation and echo effects—is irony truly a driver of political discourse? Does it really serve to unite a political community, or does it rather reinforce certain prejudices within the comfort of an echo chamber? Is it an instrument of emancipation capable of overturning hierarchies, or is it merely the expression of privilege (gendered, literary, etc.)? Moving past easy distinctions between "good" and "bad" irony (which ultimately boils down to distinguishing between the irony we like and the irony we don't), the book investigates the political ambiguities of irony in the contemporary world. The volume addresses contemporary political discourse and the complex role that irony plays within public debate. By questioning whether irony truly serves as a driver of political critique or merely reinforces existing echo chambers, the text examines its potential as both an instrument of emancipation and an expression of privilege. This inquiry moves beyond simplistic divisions between approved and disapproved forms of irony to confront its deeper ambiguities.

Readers interested in the intersections of language, power, and contemporary rhetoric may find this publication relevant. The text follows in a tradition of critical essays examining how everyday linguistic practices intersect with social hierarchies and political positioning in the modern world.
