Publisher's Description
This book examines Walter Benjamin’s The Origin of German Tragic Drama (1928) and demonstrates that it remains an essential text to think with. While scholarship has largely focused on Benjamin's "Epistemo-Critical Prologue," this study reads the Trauerspiel book as a material investigation centered on four themes—mourning play and tragedy, sovereign and martyr, melancholy, and allegory. Their constellative interrelation unfolds in light of political theology, representation, mourning and comedy, theatricality, and the problem of play, among other issues. Consequently, Benjamin's work emerges not merely as a major contribution to Baroque studies, but as deeply engaged with contemporary debates associated with thinkers such as Derrida, Foucault, Agamben, and Marin.
