The Situationist International was founded in 1957 through the convergence of several European artist collectives before evolving into a revolutionary group during the 1960s. Today, it is recognized as one of the final incarnations of the "historical avant-garde" model. Its principal thinker, Guy Debord (1931-1994), has been posthumously established as a major figure in the arts and political philosophy of the 1950s and 1960s.
As the first sociological analysis of the Situationist movement, this history sheds light on the intertwined trajectories of its key figures, decoding their relationship with art and artistic institutions, Marxist thought and intellectuals, as well as politics and activism. By offering a lucid examination of Situationist practices and ideas, Éric Brun refreshes our understanding of avant-garde movements, their forms of politicization and internationalization, and prompts a reflection on the contributions and limitations of this subversive current, which aimed for nothing less than establishing a new civilization.
A major contribution to understanding the role of artists in revolutionary dissent and that of the "situs" in May-June 1968.

"The Situationist Avant-Garde: A Sociological Analysis", by Anna Trespeuch-Berthelot.

"Dissolved in 1972, the Situationist movement continues to fascinate. Éric Brun subjects the brief existence of the Situationist International to a rigorous sociological analysis. While arguing the thesis of the avant-garde, the book only partially shatters the myth built around Guy Debord."

The Situationist International was founded in 1957 through the convergence of several European artist collectives before evolving into a revolutionary group during the 1960s. It is recognized as one of the final incarnations of the historical avant-garde model. Guy Debord (1931-1994) is a major figure in the arts and political philosophy of the 1950s and 1960s. Les situationnistes. Une avant-garde totale (1950-1972) by Éric Brun provides a sociological analysis of the movement, tracing the trajectories of its key figures and their relationship with art, institutions, Marxist thought, and politics.

This study examines the sociological dimensions of the movement, including the logic of its politicization and its international reach. It covers the group's relationship with the art world, the formation of the Situationist program, and the movement's crisis. Readers interested in the history of twentieth-century avant-garde movements and the role of intellectuals in political change may find this sociological perspective relevant.
