MIGRANT WRITINGS: From Exile to Literary Migrance in the Francophone Novel
Likely the latest iteration of literary inquiry into migration, migrant writings—among other possible paradigms—emerge as a representation of the in-between. Analyzed through the lens of the trauma of departure, mobility, and integration into the host country, they generate thematic, narrative, and discursive configurations that are as fruitful as they are problematic.
Addressing the inadequacies of reading migrant writings through prepackaged categories, and taking into account the diverse stakes and plays of writing from one generation or even author to another, the analyses in this collective volume move in various directions. They migrate from the question of exile toward a textual and discursive rendering of the diverse conditions and circumstances of emigration and immigration in literary production.
The observation is one of typological effervescence, signaling the flexibility, porosity, and challenges surrounding the field and very notion of migrant writings: writings wrenched from the limbo of memory, confronting the difficulties of analyzing contemporary works whose primary certainty lies in bold explorations of the imaginary and the expression of identities in transit and in crisis…
Holding a State Doctorate, Adama COULIBALY is currently a University Professor. He teaches the Francophone African novel and narrative semiotics in the Department of Modern Literature at Félix Houphouët Boigny University in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). A specialist in literary postmodernism and cultural and literary transfers, his research interests extend to literary theory and the renewal of novelistic writing in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to some thirty articles, he has published Des techniques aux stratégies d’écriture dans la création romanesque de Tierno Monénembo (L’Harmattan, 2011) and, as co-editor, Intertextualité et Transculturalité, En-Quête journal no. 17, EDUCI (2007), Le postmodernisme dans le roman africain : Formes, enjeux et perspectives (2012), Je(ux) narratifs dans le roman africain (2013), and Médias et Littérature : formes, pratiques et postures (2014).
Yao Louis KONAN is an Assistant Professor at Alassane Ouattara University. His research focuses primarily on new writing styles, postmodernism, migrant writing, and mobility within the contemporary African novel. Author of about ten articles, he co-edited L(in)forme dans le roman africain (L’Harmattan, 2014). He is currently working on a book: Itinéraire pour une cognition de la mobilité dans le roman nouveau africain.
Edited by Adama Coulibaly and Yao Louis Konan, this volume examines how contemporary Francophone fiction represents the experiences of displacement, border-crossing, and cultural negotiation. The contributions investigate the formal and thematic strategies authors use to articulate identities in transit, moving beyond rigid categorizations of exile. By analyzing narrative structures, discursive patterns, and the trauma of departure, the essays map out a vibrant literary topography defined by mobility and constant reinvention.
The book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Francophone literature, postcolonial studies, and contemporary narrative theory. It provides valuable critical frameworks for addressing works that engage with globalization and intercultural encounters. Scholars researching African literature and the evolving concept of literary migrance will find these diverse methodological approaches especially useful for understanding how modern novelists translate the complex realities of migration into bold artistic expression.
