This volume brings together critical papers—originally presented at a colloquium held at the Maison franco-japonaise in Tokyo in September 2013—focusing on French neo- and post-Japanist works created after 1945. These literary and artistic creations (photography, cinema, dance, etc.) constitute a substantial corpus that has received little scholarly attention to date. The contributions outline its main trends and characteristics. The studies feature authors such as Chris Marker, Georges Perec, Jacques Roubaud, and Jean-Philippe Toussaint, as well as Michaël Ferrier, Philippe Forest, and Gérard Macé, all three of whom contributed to this volume.
Fabien Arribert-Narce, Kohei Kuwada, and Lucy O’Meara are associate professors of French language and literature at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, the University of Tokyo-Komaba, and the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, respectively.
The study of cultural exchange between France and Japan often emphasizes historical artistic movements, yet the period following the Second World War remains a distinct area of inquiry. This volume brings together critical papers focusing on French neo- and post-Japanist works created after 1945, including photography, cinema, and dance. Readers interested in the history of cross-cultural artistic influences may find this examination of post-1945 intellectual and aesthetic exchanges relevant to their research.
