Publisher's overview:

Léon Moussinac (1890–1964) was one of the leading French communist intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century. Active as a critic of theater, cinema, and the decorative arts, his thought was deeply rooted in the social art movement. After holding editorial positions in numerous journals—serving as editorial secretary for Art et Décoration, editor-in-chief of Comœdia illustré, and founding the film columns for the Mercure de France and L'Humanité—he joined forces with Henri Barbusse and Paul Vaillant-Couturier to champion cultural and artistic democratization. His initiatives included the Friends of Spartacus, the first mass film club, and the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (AEAR), an organization that paved the way for the rallying of intellectuals against fascism. Arrested for his political beliefs in 1940 and released in 1941, he subsequently joined the French Resistance. Following the war, as director of prominent higher education institutions (IDHEC and EnsAD), Moussinac continued his creative and scholarly pursuits, publishing poetry collections, novels and short stories, as well as works dedicated to the decorative arts, cinema, and theater.
Edited by Valérie Vignaux in collaboration with François Albera, this publication combines a volume of scholarly studies with an anthology of writings. It aims to explore, without hierarchy, the diverse fields in which Moussinac was active. The first volume, entitled Léon Moussinac, un intellectuel communiste and featuring a preface by Pascal Ory, brings together contributions from renowned specialists in cinema, theater, music, literature, and poetry, including François Albera, Marie-Cécile Bouju, Vincent Casanova, Léonor Delaunay, Céline Gailleurd, Bert Hogenkamp, Laurent Le Forestier, Jean-Baptiste Para, Romain Piana, Valérie Pozner, Laurent Véray, Guillaume Vernet, and Valérie Vignaux. This is complemented by a second volume comprising a text anthology entitled Léon Moussinac, critique et théoricien des arts. While primarily gathering his film criticism, it also includes a selection of articles dedicated to the decorative arts, theater, and music. Together, these studies and texts offer valuable insight into Moussinac's intellectual trajectory.

The early twentieth century witnessed intense debates regarding the intersection of politics, aesthetics, and mass culture across Europe. Intellectuals frequently engaged with the social art movement, seeking to bridge the gap between avant-garde experimentation and cultural democratization through journalism, film clubs, and collective organizations. Figures associated with these movements often navigated the complex tensions between artistic autonomy and political commitment, particularly during the rise of fascism and the upheavals of the Second World War. Within French intellectual history, such figures contributed significantly to the institutionalization of cinema and the decorative arts as serious fields of critical inquiry.
