During the 19th century, the notion of the detail emerged as a major theoretical tool for understanding images and as an essential element in reflections on representation and its techniques.

Stimulated by the advent of the photographic image—whose exceptionally detailed rendering acted as a catalyst—reflection on the detail extended across various cultural spheres. Sometimes described as "important little things that must be kept in check" (Ingres), whose "uprising" (Baudelaire) or "tedium" (Delacroix) was feared, and sometimes perceived as the foundation of novelistic truth (Balzac) by those who suffered from the "hypertrophy of the true detail" (Zola), details became central to numerous artistic and scientific debates alike. Drawing on a vast corpus of texts (novels, art criticism, journalistic essays, and scientific works), the book offers a unique perspective on the visual culture of the period, encompassing works of art, reproductions of artworks, engravings, illustrations, panoramas, painting exhibitions, and photographic albums. In doing so, it contributes in a resolutely multidisciplinary way to the development of a new history of the gaze in the modern era.

The nineteenth century witnessed a profound shift in how visual information was processed and categorized, largely driven by the emergence of new mechanical reproduction techniques. During this period, the detail transitioned from a minor aesthetic concern to a central focus of intellectual debate, influencing both artistic production and scientific observation. This discourse often centered on the tension between the desire for empirical accuracy and the fear of visual fragmentation.

Readers interested in the evolution of visual perception and the history of art criticism may find this analysis relevant. Les paradoxes du détail. Voir, savoir, représenter à l'ère de la photographie examines the role of the detail in nineteenth-century visual culture, drawing on a corpus that includes novels, art criticism, journalistic essays, and scientific works. The study considers various media, such as paintings, engravings, illustrations, panoramas, and photographic albums, to explore how the detail functioned as a tool for understanding images and representation.
